Licensed septic pumper directory (official state registries)
Instead of building our own contractor list, this directory points you to the government registries that license septic pumping and septage hauling businesses. These are the agencies' own records, so they are more current than any list we could keep. It currently covers six states. Licensing works differently in each state, and in many states it's handled by counties, so a missing state doesn't mean pumpers there are unlicensed. Each link was checked on November 7, 2026.
| State | Agency | What the registry covers | Registry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minnesota | Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) | Subsurface sewage treatment system (SSTS) businesses. Pumpers hold the "Maintainer" license. MPCA notes that licensed businesses may work anywhere in the state. | SSTS business search |
| Florida | Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) | Registered septic tank contractors and contracting businesses. DEP says the search is updated daily. County health departments still handle permits. | Search for a contractor (DEP page) |
| Pennsylvania | Pennsylvania DEP | Businesses that pump septic tanks or haul residential septage must register with DEP. Registered haulers display a 5-digit transporter number on their trucks. | Active hauler list, Sept 2026 (XLSX) |
| Michigan | Michigan EGLE, Septage Waste Program | Licensed domestic septage businesses and their licensed hauling vehicles, including license expiration dates. | Septage Hauler Directory |
| North Carolina | NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) | Public permit records for permitted Septage Management Firms (pumpers), organized by permit number. | Septage firm records (DEQ page) |
| Texas | Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) | Individual OSSF licenses, including Maintenance Providers for aerobic systems. TCEQ licenses maintenance providers as individuals, not companies. | TCEQ license search |
How to use a registry
- Get the business's legal name and, where used, its license or transporter number from the quote or the truck.
- Search the registry and check that the license is active and covers pumping or hauling.
- If you can't find a record, ask the business for its license number, or contact the agency.
- Then compare prices using our cost guide and the questions to ask.
SepticPumpGuide doesn't add, remove, or rank businesses, and it doesn't endorse anyone in these registries. MPCA says its search results aren't intended to be used as advertising. Inclusion in a registry shows licensing status only, not quality.
